  • Walk Through 2014 Maine Cat P47

Introducing Southern Cross, hull number nine of the Maine Cat P47 series built and delivered to her current owners in late 2014.  Southern Cross was built to the most comprehensive specification and customization of any of the Maine Cat power catamarans resulting in a vessel that is unique, with no expense spared. The owners have since used Southern Cross from their Chesapeake Bay base for cruising to Florida and the Bahamas. She is an Express Cruiser which allows for ICW travel unimpeded by the need to wait for most of the bridges between Norfolk and Florida. The Express also has the advantage over a fly-bridge in that windage is lower, weight is less and top-heavy motion diminished.

The Maine Cat P47 was the culmination of the designer/builder's many years of experience in multi-hull sailboat and powerboat design. With a Down East look translated into the modern idiom of multi-hull spaciousness and efficiency, the P47 set a new standard for a vessel easily handled by a couple for extended cruising. Accommodations are for two couples in en- suite cabins with additional salon sleeping for another two. Interior finishes are in American Cherry. Southern Cross has a unique salon layout compared to the earlier versions of this model. Outstanding features are the linear galley with generous counter space, the raised dual helm station, the navigator's work-station and the U shaped settee and table to starboard.

With twin Volvo 220hp turbo charged common rail diesels, an impressive 20+ knots is possible at wide open throttle.  Cruising speed is in the 15 to 17 knot range with the boat fully loaded for extended cruising. At this speed fuel burn is a total of 14 gallons per hour but this quickly reduces to only 3.3 gallons per hour at comfortable 8.3 knots "trawler speed".  At any speed the 18ft beam provides exceptional form stability, while the two slender displacement hulls slice through the water with little impact on the vessel's motion. The 2'7" bridge deck and flared bow sections eliminate the discomfort of wave slams in all but the most severe conditions. Engine noise and vibration has been dramatically reduced by placing the machinery aft of the living spaces and utilizing the Evolution Marine oil-lubricated shaft system with thrust bearing to isolate the propeller's thrust from the engines.

The Maine Cat P47 provides an outstanding platform for quick, efficient and comfortable cruising in an easily handled boat that is as comfortable in ocean swells as gunk-holing in backwaters. Southern Cross has been immaculately maintained and has a significant and well documented list of upgrades and improvements since she left the factory.  Replacement value would be well in excess of one million dollars.

Key features of Southern Cross include but are not limited to:

  • Upgraded Engines to 220 hp Volvo Turbo's compared to the lower hp found on some other Maine PC's
  • Northern Lights 6Kw Generator
  • Solar Array 915 Watts
